NORWAY

"Land of the Midnight Sun"

Photographer - Gaby Brook / NTR

Norway is a country full of surprises such as its snow capped mountains, beautiful blue water fjords, massive glaciers, and laid back cities. But it is also known for its unique stave churches, and of course the Vikings.

We found that the best time to experience Norway was May to September, when the weather is mild and the daylight hours are long. Wintertime however can be a totally different story, when it's really cold and dark. The country does offer its visitors endless kilometres of excellent ski trails that plough through the country, there is mountain climbing, glacier hiking, sailing, all year round skiing and of course excellent fishing and every visitor should take a fjord cruise along the beautiful Sognefjord.

Norway is considered to be one of the more expensive Scand avian countries but it still manages to offer its visitors an endless selection of sports activates, some stunning scenery and a warm welcome.

Norway's capital and largest city, which dates back to 1048 making it the oldest of the Scandinavian capitals. Oslo sits at the mouth of the Oslo fjord and is an interesting blend of museums, galleries, pleasant green parks and historical monuments. With most of the highpoints within walking distance of the city centre but visitors also find that the cities public transport system is easy to use and extensive.

One of the most popular attractions is the medieval AKERSHUS FORTRESS & AKERSHUS CASTLE and the interesting RESISTANCE MUSEUM, which reflects the Norwegian struggle during WWII. Visitors should also take stroll through or sit and have lunch in VIGELAND PARK, which is a delightful green park full of duck ponds famous statues by Gustav Vineland and lush green open spaces. Art buffs should visit The NATIONAL GALLERY whose exhibits include Munch's famous painting the "Scream" as over 5,000 more fine exhibits.

The peninsula of BYGDOY is only a short 10-minute ferry ride from the harbour. The area is famous for it's excavated Viking long boats, maritime museums, the largest open-air folk museum, some excellent restored stave churches and is home to some good beaches.

Geirangerfjord

Photographer - Per Eide / NTR

What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in beauty. It is a complex branch of the Storfjord, which is noticeable for it’s impressive cascading waterfalls, and pretty villages of Geiranger and Hellesylt, which sit at either end of the fjord. Visitors that wish to explore this fjord usually arrive via the Trollstigen Highway, which takes you through some of the countries highest peaks before reaching Tafjord. Then a short ferry ride will then take you along the Ørneveien where you will be greeted with you first views of the stunning fjord.

Sognefjord

Photographer - Kurt Hamann / NTR

Is the longest deepest fjord in Europe, which snakes deep into the country where it combines with the Jotunheimen and the mighty Jostedalsbreen Glacier to create the municipality of Luster. Here you will find picturesque villages, isolated hamlets, and are free to explore the many arms of the fjord where the untouched and beautiful the landscape unfolds before your eyes at every turn.

Is a beautiful little town on the south coast of he country. It was once called the “Venice of Scandinavia” due to the fact that the town was constructed on seven islands that were connected by a network of canals at one time. The town is home is one of the finest and most picturesque collections of wooden houses in the country, which in 1992 won the coveted Europa-Nostra award. The best way to see Arendal is to take one of the leisurely guided walking tours around the town. The town has a number of tourist attractions, which include the vibrant harbour area that in the summer teems with boats and life. As well as various museums, art galleries, historical buildings and landmarks.
